Yes, I watched. No I still don’t get it
So Stranger Things is on Netflix and has a HUGE following. They have cosplayers, fan fiction and I would be willing to bet there are people out there right now looking for Barb and not in the LARP-ing kind of way.
What I don’t understand is why this thing is so popular? Is it the 80’s Nostalgia? During this decade, great things happened. Myself and my wife were born during this magic time of shoulder pads and really bad hair. I mean the 80’s was overall a “Meh” decade and I can’t imagine that being the reason this show is so popular.
Is it the monster? That can’t be it either. I have seen scarier monsters on the show Supernatural. Hell, I have seen scarier things just by not having WIFI password. Anyone ever watch a senior citizen use an emoji in a text message? I have. My 60+ year old father has recently started using emoji in text messages. The idea that my dad is texting is enough to give me sleepless nights, let alone him using a laughing emoji. ON a scale of 1-10 on scariness, the stranger things creature was like a 6. My dad using emoji a 10.
Is it the kids? Maybe. The kids are cute as far as kids go. None of them are clever or memorable in any way. Will is a memorable character just because they are looking for him the whole series and yell his name constantly. I mean if I went around yelling my name everywhere people would remember my name too. Eleven or Elle is memorable because she is magic and a unique name that gets used regularly. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t tell you any of the other kids if you gave me 100 tries.
A friend of mine once told me, “There are Prince Songs that I just don’t get. But that is not Prince’s fault, it is mine.” I think that may be where I am with this show. I watched Stranger Things and thought it was an “ok” series. I can take or leave it. Will I watch season 2? Don’t know. If I run into a drought of things to watch, then maybe. No promises though.
Maybe you can help me understand this. Let me know in the comments.
